WISdom Overview

WISdom is a FinOps and Observability platform designed to help organizations monitor, optimize, and manage their database infrastructure costs and performance. FinOps capabilities enable organizations to track, analyze, and optimize database infrastructure spending across cloud and on-premises environments. The platform currently provides comprehensive observability for Microsoft SQL Server environments, with FinOps capabilities expanding to support additional database platforms including Postgres, MySQL, Oracle, Databricks, Snowflake, and others. WISdom is a FinOps Certified Platform — the only certified platform specifically designed for database environments.

Platform Architecture

Fortified’s WISdom provides an agentless data collection service that efficiently gathers system metadata, runtime statistics, and configuration data from monitored database instances. The platform leverages Microsoft Azure infrastructure to ensure secure data transfer, processing, and storage. The WISdom data collector service operates locally on virtual machines (VMs) within your environment to securely monitor and collect data from managed servers.

The local WISdom application communicates with the Fortified cloud environment to receive configuration updates and serves as the ingestion point for your environment’s database statistics. WISdom Data Collection services collect and transmit monitoring information to a dedicated Azure API for processing and storage in the backend Azure Database.

Data Collection and Processing

WISdom gathers metadata, runtime, and configuration data using WMI and SQL calls. Importantly, no sensitive data is transferred to the Fortified WISdom environment, ensuring privacy and security. To optimize resource usage, WISdom intelligently collects data based on necessity, with collection frequencies ranging from once per minute to once per month, depending on the data type. This adaptive approach ensures efficient data management without overloading monitored systems.

All uploaded information is encrypted using TLS 1.2 or higher and transmitted to the Azure API for processing. Once processed, the data is routed to each client’s individual Azure database, where additional formatting and storage operations prepare the data for display in the WISdom user interface.

Security and Encryption

Each client’s data collector service is equipped with a unique key pair for secure data transfer and processing. All data is encrypted using this dedicated key pair, provided by Fortified, and is automatically updated weekly.

Configuration updates are securely transmitted through an Azure API connection, encrypted using a certificate pair. This certificate pair is stored exclusively on Fortified’s central server and the client’s machine running the WISdom service. Access to the data and encryption keys is strictly limited to the client and Fortified, ensuring that only authorized parties can access sensitive information.

WISdom’s architecture includes multiple layers of security to ensure data integrity and confidentiality:

  • SOC 2 Type II Compliant: Independently audited security controls, data handling practices, and platform availability
  • Encryption Standards: AES-256 at rest, TLS 1.2+ in transit, with unique key pairs per data collector rotated weekly
  • Regulatory Alignment: Data collection practices designed to align with GDPR, HIPAA, and other major frameworks
