Cost Management

The Cost Management screen enables the user to create customized cost models to enhance WISdom's FinOps features. By default, WISdom's costs for Infrastructure, Data, and Code are based on industry averages for SQL Server Licensing and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) resources in AWS and Azure.

There is a single card with three sections: Licensing, Storage, and Server Type.

  • Licensing allows the definition of annual, per CPU costs for SQL Server Standard and Enterprise Edition licenses.
    • Click the Pencil icon to edit these values.
    • For environments where SQL Server is licensed at the host level then presented to virtualized guests, we recommend calculating the average oversubscription across all hosts and applying that factor to the license cost at the host level.
  • Storage allows the definition of one or more tiers of storage, assigned an annual cost per gigabyte of storage.
    • This is used for the cost modeling for databases and indexes.
  • Server Type allows the definition of one or more classes of hardware, assigned an annual cost per server.
    • This is used for modeling the cost of infrastructure and code.

The [+ Cost] button in the top-right allows the creation of new Storage or Server Type cost models.

These costs are applied to Hosts in the Collection - Resources section of the Admin Console.

Note that customized costs will not be applied retroactively to code, only to collections that happen after the cost model has been applied.
